Not only Joshimath, other regions of Uttarakhand are also witnessing cracks

Debjit Mukherjee: The crisis in Joshimath is now repeating in several other hill towns across Uttarakhand. That sinking feeling is no longer restricted to Joshimath and fast spreading to other hill towns of Uttarakhand. Residents of Karnaprayag, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi, Rishikesh, Nainital and Mussoorie… are among those who are worried as their homes and roads see cracks.

Residents like Gabbar Singh Rawat from Karnaprayag point out that they, too, are at risk due to cracks in buildings and roads. The crisis in Joshimath has escalated since the beginning of January, after an aquifer burst in the under construction tunnel of the 520 MW Tapovan-Vishnugad hydropower project. Following that cracks in the town’s buildings widened and led to panic-stricken residents being forced to flee their homes .
