Mohammed Zubair moved SC seeking to quash FIRs against him

Debjit Mukherjee: AltNews co-founder Mohammed Zubair on Thursday moved the Supreme Court seeking to quash as many as six FIRs lodged against him in Uttar Pradesh. The petition he filed challenges the FIRs registered at Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Muzaffarnagar, Ghaziabad and two at Hathras. The plea also challenges the constitution of the SIT by the Uttar Pradesh Police.

Meanwhile, the Delhi court order on his bail plea in a case related to a 2018 tweet which allegedly hurt religious sentiments has been reserved for Friday. Advocate Vrinda Grover, representing Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair, Thursday told the Delhi court the investigation into the case doesn’t require him in custody as “all investigation is electronic” and that any further curtailment of his liberty will be in violation of Supreme Court ruling. The court was hearing Zubair’s bail plea in a case related to a 2018 tweet which allegedly hurt religious sentiments.

Meanwhile, Special Public Prosecutor Atul Srivastava argued that Rs 56 lakh was credited to Zubair’s account through Razorpay. “We gave a notice to Razorpay. They provided UPI. Through NPCI, we can get particulars of bank. There is certain forgery also in this case which may be done, we are looking at that. Banks notice have already been issued,” Srivastava added. When the court asked Srivastava why Zubair’s custody is necessary, he said: “The persons who are Gumnaam (anonymous) will remain Gumnaam if he comes out. We have been trying our best to contact them.” The court then reserved the order in the case for Friday, 2 pm.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police Special Cell “infiltrated and planted” 30 dummy improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in places with high footfall over the past month, of which only 12 were detected — by the public, private security guards, and local police. The mock infiltration exercise came in light of a warning by Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) that it would orchestrate suicide bombings in Delhi, Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat over comments on the Prophet made by suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma.
