Street protest by Aliah University students over land transfer and Firhad Hakim’s comment

Salma Sultana, Kolkata: Students of Aliah University took to the streets on Monday to protest the government’s decision regarding the transfer of Aliah University land and condemn the minister and mayor Firhad Hakim’s ‘Badmaish’ comment. The agitating students also demanded the construction of proposed hostel, playground, staff quarter, library and other infrastructure on the land belonging to the university.

Recently in a meeting at Nabanna, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee proposed to give the land adjacent to Park Circus Campus of Aliah University to Calcutta National Medical College to solve the location problem of the latter and asked to talk to Aliah students about it. Minister and mayor Firhad Hakim made an oblique comment and said “They are badmaash. Do not talk to them. It has to be done”. On Monday, Firhad Hakim’s comments were strongly condemned and a protest march was called. The students complain that the university authorities have demanded the construction of hostels but now they are opposing the student movement. However, the agitating students are looking at the standpoint of the university authorities with suspicion.
