Action could be initiated against TMC MP Mahua Moitra for criticising the Lok Sabha chair

News Desk: Action could be initiated against TMC MP Mahua Moitra for criticising the Chair over decisions taken during her speech in the Lok Sabha. The TMC leader could also be let off with a warning, according to sources.

Moitra made a fiery speech in the lower house on Friday while speaking on behalf of her party on the Motion of Thanks to the President.

At the time of her speech, BJP MP Rama Devi was in the Chair.

The TMC MP alleged that she was not allowed to speak for the entirety of the time allotted to her. She had also accused MP Rama Devi, who was in the Chair at the time, of trying to interrupt her speech by asking her to “speak calmly”.

Sources said the TMC is also not happy with her conduct.

Veteran Member of Parliament Sougata Roy, as the leader of the TMC Parliamentary Party in Lok Sabha, is entitled to a large share of the time allotted to the party to present its views on any motion, said party insiders.

In her speech in the Lok Sabha, Mahua Moitra expressed vehement opposition to the President’s Address to a joint session of Parliament.

“This government wants to alter history. They’re fearful of the future and they mistrust the present. The president, early on in his address, speaks about freedom fighters who secured India’s rights but this is just lip service” she said.

Moitra went on to add “What is the kind of Republic we want? What is the idea of India that we are willing to stand up for, fight for… get jailed for. Ours is a living Constitution. It breathes as long as we are willing to breathe life into it. Otherwise it’s a piece of paper, black and white which can be smudged into any shade of grey by any majoritarian government”.
