Fire in Punalur-Madurai Express, Mamata Banerjee condemns

Debjit Mukherjee: Cooking with gas on moving Punalur-Madurai Express train resulted in fire. This tragic accident took place in Madurai. Firefighters went and brought the fire under control. It is known that nine people died in the fire. Several other passengers were injured. The injured were rescued and admitted to the local railway hospital. All the deceased are residents of Uttar Pradesh.

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the accident. She said, “Another devastating incident in railways, this time at Madurai (Tamil Nadu) today, involving a massive fire in a train, and leading to at least 9 shocking and tragic deaths and minimally 20 critical injury case.

“While I convey my condolences to the families of the deceased & pray for the injured, expect that inquires would fix responsibilities soon. May I also urge the railway authorities to be more vigilant and less callous about safety and human lives?”

The railway has blamed the passengers. The Railways has also announced a donation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased. Governments of Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh have also assured all help to the injured.
