Md Ismail, Malda: His name was enough for entire Malda. His name was not a name, but a big ray of hope for the people of Malda. His dedication towards the welfare of society was something that people still remember. His brave attitude and sincerity earned him respect. Not only respect, his name earned a huge number of votes for his party. He is none other than Abu Barkat Ataur Ghani Khan Choudhury, the power house of Indian National Congress.
Choudhury was popularly known as Barkat Da. His supporters used to call him by that name. Under him, Malda was nothing less than heaven. Not only Malda, entire West Bengal has seen progress and development. He took active part in introducing the Kolkata Metro Railway and Circular Railways in Kolkata and towards establishing the Malda Town Railway Station. He is often respected as the architect of modern Malda.
But his successors failed to maintain dominance in Malda after his death. Now there’s no sign of Indian National Congress in that particular North Bengal region. It’s the current ruling party, the Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress government, who’s running the show in entire North Bengal. In all major elections, TMC has shown it’s dominance in Ghani Khan’s empire. In the recent Panchayat Election, TMC win by a significant margin.
One section believe that chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s personality has won votes for TMC. On the other hand, another section believe that it’s the hidden alliance between INC-CPIM-ISF and BJP which backfired the four and in return helped TMC. But whatever the reason is, the alliance will surely look forward to regain power in the region.
