India-Taliban meeting: Discussions held over safety, security and early return of Indian nationals

News Desk: The first meeting between India and Taliban took place at Doha on Tuesday. Ambassador Deepak Mittal and Taliban’s political office Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai discussed on  safety, security and early return of Indian nationals stranded in Afghanistan. The Indian ambassador also raised India’s concern that Afghanistan’s soil should not be used for anti-Indian activities and terrorism in any manner. In return, positive addressing of these issues was assured by Stanekzai.

An official statement said “The meeting took place at the Embassy of India, Doha, on the request of the Taliban side. Discussions focused on safety, security and early return of Indian nationals stranded in Afghanistan”

“We also had discussion about not using Afghanistan soil for anti-Indian activities and terrorism in any manner. They assured us that these issues will be positively addressed” the statement added.

“Taliban want good ties with India”: Zabihullah Mujahid

Earlier on Monday, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid made it clear that the new government formed under the Taliban wants good relations with India.

Mujahid said “India is an important country in the region and Taliban will not be a threat to them. We want good relations with India”

When asked about reports suggesting Taliban siding with Pakistan against India, he said “Such reports are baseless. The Taliban won’t allow any other country to be endangered by us. We assure India that our side will not be a threat to them”
