Mamata Banerjee: Zoology professor of Calcutta University booked for ‘threatening to kill Mamata Banerjee’

News Desk: A Zoology professor of the Calcutta University, Arindam Bhattacharya, was booked for allegedly threatening on social media to kill West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. He was booked under IPC Sections 505 (1B) (with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public), 506 (threat be to cause death or grievous hurt) and 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy), said Murlidhar Sharma, the joint commissioner of police (crime).

The case was registered against Bhattacharya on the basis of a complaint filed by PhD scholar Tamal Dutta. Police said “The complainant is a research scholar at CU, police said. No arrest has been made yet and the accused has been booked under IPC section 506 (criminal intimidation)”

Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Murlidhar Sharma said “According to the complaint, the professor of zoology, in a post apparently made from his Facebook account, has used a phrase: “mere fele devar ichha achhe (want to kill you). A probe is on”

“After seeing the post, I became worried about the safety of the CM. I request you to take adequate action against an such ant-social remark” read the police complaint letter.

On this, Bhattacharya said “I didn’t make any comments against the chief minister. The complainant is a Trinamool Congress supporter. I am waiting for the police to take steps and only after that I will seek legal advice”
