TMC delays permission for BJP’s Rath Yatras

News Desk: With Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Jagat Prakash Nadda looking to flag off a rally in poll-bound West Bengal that’s currently under Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) regime, the state Chief Secretary’s Office has asked the BJP to approach the local authorities to seek permission for yatras from where they are to be taken out.

Shah and Nadda are expected to flag off five ‘Parivartan Yatras’ across the state from February 6 in Bengal for the BJP. The yatra would run for 25 days and the yatras would start from Nabadwip, Coochbehar, Kakdwip, Jhargram and Tarapith. While the first yatra is slated to be kick-started by Nadda from Nabadwip, Shah will participate in a yatra from Cooch Behar on February 11.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also visit Haldia on February 7 to inaugurate a government project and thereafter participate in a ‘Jan Sabha’ organised by the party where he will address the public.

Plea filed in Calcutta High Court over BJP’s Rath Yatra

However, even before the BJP could get permission, a PIL has been filed in the Calcutta High Court over the BJP’s Rath Yatra citing a possible deterioration of law and order as well as the Covid-19 pandemic situation in the state. The plea has been filed by Rama Prasad Shankar, an advocate in the Calcutta High Court. In the same petition, he tried to highlight that back in 2018, a similar Rath Yatra was planned the BJP and the court had stalled the yatra citing a deterioration in the law and order situation.

Calcutta High Court judge RP Sarkar also said: “The BJP has announced that it will start the Yatra on February 6 continue for 25 days. I beg to pray before Chief Justice to look into the matter. There is COVID-19, and law and order situation so the court should immediately stop the Yatra at this stage.”
