News Desk: The election fever is picking up in India’s largest state as the Bharatiya Janata Party eyes a return to power under Yogi Adityanath amid resurgent Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party, while the Congress appears to play the fourth fiddle in the fierce contest.
Hinting at his plans for the 2022 Assembly polls, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday said that his party aims to field “popular faces” in next year’s elections and is raring to go once the Election Commission of India announces the schedule.
“We will field popular faces in the upcoming Assembly elections. We are working on it and will announce the names of the candidates as soon as the election dates are out” Yadav said.
He said that the Samajwadi Party has once again got the opportunity to hold a ‘yatra’ in Uttar Pradesh, and will capitalise on that to weed out the BJP rule.
“We are again getting an opportunity to hold rath yatra and this time. It is a ‘vijay yatra’ of Samajwadi Party as the people of Uttar Pradesh are disappointed with the BJP government” the SP chief said.
Commenting on the Lakhimpur Kheri incident, Yadav said that his party does not trust that the BJP government will bring the culprits to justice.
“We don’t trust that BJP government will bring the culprit/s to justice. We appeal to farmers to throw this government out of power. Videos and people at the spot indicated involvement of the son of MoS Home Ajay Mishra Teni, along with others. Their vehicles hit the farmers which led to their death. If he is still a minister, how will the police enter his house? He must resign and the accused must be arrested” Yadav claimed.
He added that the state government deployed police personnel to stop Opposition leaders from visiting the site of the accident.
“Till the time we were ready to leave, there were police and RAF personnel barricading outside my house. I’ll soon visit the family of the bereaved” the Samajwadi Party chief said.
