News Desk: Gunshots were fired in the air by unidentified people on Sunday night near Singhu border, where the farmers have been protesting against the three contentious agriculture reform laws for the past 100 days.
The shots were fired when a langar was taking place at the protest site on the Haryana side of the Singhu border. Farmers said four men came in a car and fled after firing three rounds in the air.
Police suspect the miscreants were from Punjab since the vehicle they used had a number plate of the state.
After the incident was reported, police personnel from Haryana’s Kundli rushed to the spot and launched an investigation.
The development took place hours before hundreds of women farmers took part in several activities and held tractor marches to celebrate International Women’s Day.
The protests at Singhu began on November 25 last year, when thousands of farmers — mainly from Punjab and Haryana — marched towards the national capital demanding a complete repeal of the legislations.
The farmers fear the laws will lead to the abolishment of the minimum support price (MSP) guaranteed by the government on select crops, and leave them at the mercy of big corporates.
