News Desk: Punjab farmers proceeding towards Delhi during the ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest, to protest the anti-agricultural farm bills, met with cop violence on their way. Situation heated up at the Shambu inter-state border on the national highway when farmers threw police barricades off the bridge into the Ghaggar river. The Haryana police in return used water cannons and tear gas to stop them. Delhi Metro on Wednesday said its services to neighbouring cities of the national capital will remain suspended till 2 pm today in view of a planned protest march by farmers against Centre’s new farm laws.
Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, Arvind Kejriwal and Mamata Banerjee strongly criticized this harsh attack on the farmers.
Amarinder Singh
Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh condemned this attack on innocent farmers and got engaged in a war of tweets with chief minister of Haryana Manohar Lal Khattar. Singh slammed Khattar for stopping farmers from moving towards the national capital, terming it as “totally undemocratic and unconstitutional”, the latter told the Punjab chief minister to stop “inciting innocent farmers”
Arvind Kejriwal
Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on this tweeted “Instead of withdrawing the Farm Bills, farmers are being prevented from holding a peaceful demonstration, water cannon being used on them. This is absolutely wrong. Holding a peaceful demonstration is a constitutional right”
Mamata Banerjee
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee offered her helping hand and agreed to join the protests if invited. She said
“The farm bills have snatched the rights of the farmers. This Bill is against farmers, it will pave the way for the middleman and there will be more corruption. The way peaceful farmers were treated is highly condemnable. They cannot snatch the democratic rights of the farmers. I fully support their protest and if invited, I can also join.
The central government has not only snatched the democratic rights but also tried to snatch food from the common people.
A dangerous trend is going on. They are calling for one nation and one party,” she said. “They are snatching everything from the elected state government. The situation is alarming. I will continue to fight against these evil forces till my death”
