News Desk: The Desh Bhagat Yaadgar Committee wrote a letter to PM Modi demanding restoration of Jallianwala Bagh’s old look. The members of the committee recently visited the memorial on September 4 and after that they raised objections.
Objections raised by the committee members
“We have also asked the government not to impose any entrance fee for visiting the memorial, as they have constructed booking counters at the memorial.
The changes divested the memorial of its historical heritage and transformed it into a picnic spot.
The murals displayed on the walls of its entrance remind one of a festival and not of a place where more than thousands of Indians were massacred by the British government. Similarly, the well in which hundreds of people jumped to escape the British, has now been concealed in a glass wall through which almost nothing is visible.
In the same manner, the rendition of history in the videos has its own deliberate omissions and inaccuracies. The use of the term ‘nationalism’ and avoidance of the terms ‘freedom struggle’ or ‘anti-colonial movement’ is also methodologically problematic”
Earlier Congress leader Rahul Gandhi raised objections
On August 31, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the saffron’s revamping of the Jallianwala Bagh memorial. Calling it an ‘insult to martyrs’, he said that only a person who does not know the meaning of martyrdom can inflict such an insult.
Taking it to Twitter, he said “Only a person who does not know the meaning of martyrdom can inflict such an insult on the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh. I am the son of a martyr – I will not tolerate the insult of martyrs at any cost. We are against this indecent cruelty”
In another tweet, he said “Those who didn’t struggle for freedom will not understand those who did”
PM Modi dedicated to the nation the renovated complex of Jallianwala Bagh memorial
On August 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation the renovated complex of Jallianwala Bagh memorial.
During the event, he also digitally inaugurated the museum galleries at the memorial.
As part of the inaugural event, a wreath-laying ceremony was also held and two-minute silence was observed in the memory of those killed in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
A sound and light show was held to depict the events of the day of the massacre.
