Tripura police arrested TMC leader Saayoni Ghosh, chaos outside police station

News Desk: The Tripura Police on Sunday arrested youth TMC leader Saayoni Ghosh on charges of promoting enmity between people, attempt to murder, criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy.

An FIR registered against her at the East Agartala Police Station alleged that she disturbed a municipal poll rally of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb at Ashram Chowmuhani area on Saturday.

Police, narrating the entire story, said that the youth TMC leader loudly shouted at a BJP street corner meeting addressed by Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Saturday and exclaimed ‘khela hobe’. They also claimed finding of preliminary evidence against her and alleged involvement of four others. However, while confirming that her vehicle was being driven by someone else, they didn’t clarify how she attempted to murder someone or whom she tried to kill.

Her colleague TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev said that she has been framed in a false case and the main reason behind arresting her was to disrupt TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s rally. She explained that cops went to a hotel where Ghosh was staying on Saturday night and asked her to report to the police station and accordingly she reported to the police station on Sunday.

The Rajya Sabha MP also alleged that her party tried to file 11 complaints of political violence in the run-up to the Tripura civic polls but none of them was registered by police but they swung into action on cases filed by the ruling BJP.

Ghosh’s counsel, Shankar Lodh, said “Someone from the CM’s poll meeting venue said ‘Khela Hobe’ to her and she repeated the same slogan”

“It’s a political slogan and it can’t be unconstitutional. If someone says he or she will kill someone, that might be unconstitutional” he added.

As per police, during Ghosh’s interrogation, a group of miscreants assembled nearby and launched an attack in which two people sustained injuries. West Tripura Additional SP Reddy said a suo motu FIR will be lodged in the incident.

Trinamool Congress leaders have alleged the attack was perpetrated by BJP backed goons.

Reacting to allegations of political violence, Tripura BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharya said “TMC isn’t even our opponent here. None of our activists attacked them. These are baseless allegations. The TMC activists should restrain themselves from using unwelcome words as well”
