“We will not allow the smuggling of cows from West Bengal”: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

News Desk: The Assam government will take all necessary steps within the ambit of the constitution to protect cows in the state, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said.

“Cow is our mother and to protect cow in Assam, the state government will take every step within the ambit of our constitution,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday — the last day of the first session of the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly.

“We believe that cow is our mother. We will not allow the smuggling of cows from West Bengal. Places where cows are worshiped, beef must not be consumed,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The new CM of Assam said he doesn’t mean that all people should change their habits all of a sudden.

Taking note of a statement by Darul Uloom on maintaining sensitivity while consuming beef in places where non-consumers are in the majority, Sarma said, “There is no need for Hotel Madina in Fancy Bazar area or Gandhibasti or Shantipur area in Guwahati as there is sensitivity. However, we can appeal to people to give up where there is no sensitivity.”

The Assam Chief Minister added that cow slaughter must be stopped.

“We have to do our work where sensitivity is there. When the AIUDF MLAs support the Cow Protection Bill, a new Assam will be built. Today AIUDF MLA Karimuddin Barbhuiya has taken an oath in the name of Allah in Sanskrit language the language is a symbol of culture and civilization and it is a good sign,” Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Assam CM also appealed to the Opposition to support the government for the development of the state.

Earlier, Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi informed the Assembly that the government was planning to introduce a new bill for cow protection in the next session.

“We will adopt a zero-tolerance policy and enforce stringent punishment for offenders. We all revere and worship cows. It is considered a sacred animal as it nurtures us through milk. In fact, it is a symbol of the divine bounty of the earth. I am happy to inform you that my government plans to introduce the Cow Protection Bill in the next Assembly session,” Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi said.
