West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee cancelled Class 10 Madhyamik and Class 12 Uchha Madhyamik board exams

News Desk: The West Bengal Class 10 Madhyamik board exams and the Class 12 Uchha Madhyamik board exams have been cancelled by CM Mamata Banerjee as public opinion has given a stand against the conduction of board exams amidst the pandemic.

Mamata Banerjee said in a press conference on Tuesday that 79% of the 24000 emails that were received from the public stood against conducting the Class 10 Madhyamik board exams 2021, while 83% voted against the Uchha Madhyamik Class 12 board exams.

On June 6, the state government had provided three email addresses and had asked the public for their opinion on whether exams should be conducted or not.

The expert committee had also stated that exams should not be taken now considering that many schools are now being used as safehouses for Covid-19 patients as well.

“Many students face problems if no exams are conducted as well. Good students use the marks from board exams to decide their future,” the CM said, asking officials to take decisions making sure that students do not face any problems.

Evaluation method yet to be decided

The solution that has been suggested is to carry out home assignments and internal assessments for declaring the Madhyamik and Uchha Madhyamik results 2021.

The expert committee has suggested that evaluation can be carried out giving 70% importance to the Class 9 performance of students and giving 30% importance to the Class 10 performance.

CM Mamata Banerjee told officials to prioritise Class 9 vs Class 10 syllabus carefully for internal evaluation, considering the fact that syllabi of the two classes were quite different.

The education department will soon be finalising the method for the same and the same will be informed within the next seven days.

The CM has asked for the evaluation process to be carried out as quickly as possible so that students do not face any problems with competitive and entrance exams necessary to continue their higher education.
