West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee met principals of medical colleges, discussed development of infrastructure

News Desk: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday met the principals of the medical colleges in Kolkata at SSKM Hospital and wanted to know about the development of infrastructure at their facilities. She asked what problems they were facing in running the hospitals, a senior official of a hospital said.

She spent over two hours at SSKM, sources said.

Among the issues discussed were the construction of a new building at NRS Medical College and Hospital, where some wards would be shifted and the development of infrastructure at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

“This was a scheduled meeting. She asked us what kind of infrastructural developments are on the cards in the medical colleges. She wanted to know if we were facing any problems and needed any assistance for upgrading the infrastructure,” said an official of a medical college.

While stepping out of the hospital, Mamata said that she had enquired about the fever cases among children reported from north Bengal. “These are normal fevers,” she said.

A senior official of the health department said that the state was preparing a treatment protocol for management of children suffering from the current fever episode.

“The lab diagnosis showed that the children were suffering from fevers which are normal during the season. They were diagnosed with influenza, RS (Respiratory Syncytial) virus, dengue and other respiratory diseases,” said the official.
