News Desk: Journalists are being repeatedly attacked while collecting news. The incident happened again in Paschim Midnapore town on Thursday when an elephant entered the town of Medinipur, the journalists Sovan Das went out to collect the news. Despite working with a press card around his neck, IC Prartha Sarathi Pal of Kotwali Police Station started slapping Shovan Das, a journalist of News 18 Bangla, and verbally abused him.
Pictures were captured by CCTV cameras. Repeatedly questions have been raised about the safety of journalists ahead of the Assembly elections. In protest of this incident, the journalists’ association of Medinipur came together and lodged a written complaint at the SP’s office, accepting the Additional SP’s deputation as there was no SP. This incident has caused a storm of condemnation in the journalist community. But it has forgotten that the media is the fourth pillar of democracy.
