Dalit women in Uttar Pradesh allegedly assaulted by upper caste men for entering their field

News Desk: Two Dalit women – Sheela Devi and her daughter-in-law Pravesh – were allegedly assaulted by upper caste Singh and his relatives, on Sunday in Mahmoodpur village of Bijnor (Uttar Pradesh), for entering their field.

On seeing the two women, Singh and his relative, allegedly hurled casteist slurs at them and attacked them with a spade. The two women suffered severe head and neck injuries and were rushed to a government hospital. Sheela was later referred to a hospital in Meerut, given her serious condition.

As per police, Singh got offended at the entry of the two Dalit women at their field, so he shouted at them and they shouted back and it enraged Singh. So he and his relatives allegedly assaulted the two women.

Bijnor’s SP Dharamveer Singh said “The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the SC/ST Act along with the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Singh was arrested after a complaint was filed by Sheela’s daughter Pinki. Efforts are being made to nab his unidentified relative”
