Bengal bypoll: CM Mamata Banerjee to begin campaign today, Congress not to field candidate

News Desk: As West Bengal bypoll is knocking at the door, chief minister Mamata Banerjee will begin her campaign in Bhawanipore constituency from Wednesday. TMC leaders Jakir Hossain and Amirul Islam will be the party’s candidates for Jangipur and Samserganj seats respectively.

For the bypoll, the Bengal BJP unit proposed six names to the party leadership in Delhi as candidate against chief minister Mamata Banerjee. Earlier state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh made it clear that “As Mamata Banerjee is a big name and a highly influential leader, so we’ll field someone strong against her in the Bhawanipore constituency”

On the other hand, the Bengal Congress unit decided that the party won’t field any candidate against the chief minister in the Bhawanipore constituency. Since Congress has decided not to field a candidate, the CPI-M is likely to contest on behalf of the alliance and will soon make an announcement.

State Congress president Adhir Chowdhury said “The high command has informed us that Congress will not field any candidate against Mamata Banerjee in Bhawanipur. The high command feels that Congress by all means doesn’t want to help BJP in any way by putting up a candidate against Mamata”
