Ganga erosion in Malda’s Ratua

Md Nawaj Shorif, Malda: Ganga erosion in Malda’s Ratua! It started from Monday night. Residents demanded a permanent solution to prevent erosion. They claim that a large area of Mahanandtola village panchayat of Ratua has been submerged in the Ganges due to the erosion. Even the temporary camp of the police has been submerged in the Ganges. On Tuesday, it rained throughout the day in the district. As a result, the fear of erosion has increased among the riverside residents. Administration officials said that the erosion situation has not yet become alarming in the district. However, the officials of the irrigation department are keeping an eye on the situation.

Locals claim that in 24 hours, about 50 acres of agricultural land from Bablabona to Nayavilaimari has been submerged in the Ganga. Besides, a temporary police camp also sank into the river. However, the policemen fled from the camp seven days ago due to the fear of erosion. If the erosion continues, Srikanttola, Jitutola, Pataldanga Kantutola, Bodharamtola on the river bank will sink, claim the locals. Ratua TMC MLA Samar Mukhopadhyay said, “The central government is not doing anything to prevent erosion. The state government is trying to prevent erosion.”

On the other hand, North Malda BJP MP Khagen Murmu countered that the state is not giving any proposal to the central government to prevent erosion. “If the state sends the proposal, I will bring the money from Delhi to prevent erosion,” he said.
