VC appointment: Governor CV Anand reprimanded by SC

Debjit Mukherjee: Governor CV Anand reprimanded by Supreme Court in the case of appointment of Vice-Chancellors in state universities. The Supreme Court issued a notice to CV Anand Bose seeking to know why the Governor took the decision despite the case being pending. He has to reply to the notice within a week. The next hearing is on October 31.

Senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi pleaded on behalf of the state in the Supreme Court hearing the case on Friday. He said, the case related to the appointment of the vice-chancellor is under trial. Therefore, it should be ensured that the new vice-chancellors appointed during this period cannot take any important policy decisions. After this observation of the judges, those who have been appointed as Interim Vice-Chancellors, will get their own salaries, but will not get any extra facilities, nor extra financial benefits as Vice-Chancellors.

On this day, the Supreme Court asked the question, when the case is under trial, who gave the power of appointment to the governor? No such power has been given to the Governor by the order of the Calcutta High Court. After this, the judges said that the apex court will not interfere in the daily work of the newly appointed vice-chancellors in the interest of the university. However, the Governor cannot make any new appointments until further orders.
